"Every year 30-40 historic thatched buildings, out of an estimated 25,000 listed properties, are destroyed and lost through preventable fires. Unless drastic measures are taken to reverse the trend, in the next 25 years up to 1,000 properties, along with their unique historical record will be irretrievably lost. "  (Source National Society of Master Thatchers : Fire in Thatch Seminar October 2005).

The biggest fear for anybody who owns a thatched property is the risk of fire and the subsequent damage that can be caused. ProtectorFoam can reduce this risk by providing fire protection between the thatch and the inside structure that significantly reduces the speed of penetration of the fire into the building as shown by burn tests. It has already proved it's worth to one thatched cottage owner in Wiltshire which can be seen here. It also has advantages where installed in steel framed structures as can be seen here.

This will give you TIME

o Time to ensure occupants and pets are safely evacuated

o Time to retrieve valuable and personal items

o Time for the fire service to arrive and prevent your property from burning to the ground

ProtectorFoam is injected into the void between the thatch and the ceiling board or lath and plaster via small holes which are drilled between each set of joists.

Heat transference from very hot flue liners which run up through the chimney best can cause a fire hazard in thatched properties especially where the liner is in contact or near contact with the heat absorbing brick. Tests have shown that by injecting ProtectorFoam into the void between the flue liner and the chimney breast will significantly reduce the transferral of heat. Obviously checks will have to be carried out (using a boroscope) to see whether it is feasible for an injection to take place.

Additional benefits to the home owner from the installation of ProtectorFoam include :-

o reduced heating bills due to the insulation properties of the foam, especially on properties with sloping ceilings directly under the thatch,
o a discount on home insurance premiums by showing the certificate of installation when insuring through insurance brokers Birnbeck Insurance Services (telephone 01934 522252).

Installation costs range from £3-5,000 for a typical thatched property including plasterboarding under the roof.
